We originally planned to go to Glasgow for just a day from Edinburgh, but when we found the bus/ferry from Belfast, we decided to stay in Glasgow for a few days.
We had a lot of things we wanted to do, including the Harry Potter train and a visit to Oben, but the timing (and weather) didn’t work out. The one thing we did from our list was a day tour to Loch Ness, Glencoe, and the Highlands.
We left on the bus at 8 am, and didn’t return until a little after 6 pm, so it was a long day but we went pretty far. The drive from Glasgow to Loch Ness without any stops is over three hours, so we knew it would be a long day.
We left Glasgow and headed toward Glencoe and the Highlands. The scenery was gorgeous but it rained so hard! We stopped a few times but it was so cold and wet out that it was hard to enjoy what we we seeing.
We did a boat tour of Loch Ness and it was so fascinating. We assumed the Loch Ness monster was folklore or something, but it definitely exists. It’s not a giant dinosaur or other farfetched explanations, but there’s something giant. Loch Ness is full of sediment and super deep, making it too dark to see much below a few meters deep, even with high tech equipment and submarines. But sonar shows large, living objects and DNA tests are mostly full of unidentified DNA. So there’s something big, alive, and unknown.
It rained for most of our boat tour, but it did finally stop toward the end, revealing how beautiful the lake is. I could see spending a few days there, relaxing. The town is also super cute.
Our last stop was the adorable town of Pitlochry. The main street looks like it’s straight out of a fairy tale. We had about an hour to walk around and check out the stores. We had homemade whiskey ice cream that was surprisingly delicious!
The tour was $76 each, plus £19 each for the Loch Ness tour. Because of how far you go, it got a little boring, but overall still worth going on. I bet it’s really beautiful when it’s not pouring out.
