The Irish Rock ‘n’ Roll Museum Experience is a must-do for any music lover visiting Dublin. A visit not only teaches you about famous Irish musicians, but it takes you through all the different stages of creating music.
After buying tickets at the museum, we waited in the adjacent pub for the tour to start. The tour begins by showing you award-wining albums and significant guitars owned by Irish musicians. We saw artifacts from Thin Lizzy, The Cranberries, Sinéad O’Conner (she died the same month we visited the museum), and, of course, U2.
As you continue on the tour, you also see artifacts the owner of the studio has collected, including Michael Jackson’s pajamas and his Jackson 5 jacket.
After watching a short film on the history of Irish music, you visit the practice rooms, where bands can practice their sets. They have drums, guitars, and a microphone ready for use, or musicians can bring their own. Unlike other music museums, this one is still an active recording studio and show venue.
Next, we headed outside and across the street to the recording studio. We saw the Thin Lizzy studio, chock full of items from his music career.
Our tour guide was so knowledgeable, and deeply involved in the music scene in Dublin. He had so many back stories and behind the scenes info, which was fascinating to learn. He also played the guitar and sang for us in the practice room!
You don’t need to be a musician, or even understand how music is made, to enjoy this tour. I love music, almost all genres, but I have absolutely no talent or rhythm. Unlike the rest of my family, I can’t play a single instrument or carry a tune (my dad even has a recording studio!) but maybe that’s why I appreciate music so much.
Located in the heart of Temple Bar, it’s the perfect spot to take a break from the rain or pint drinking and learn all about Irish music history!
