Muhammad Ali Center, Louisville, KY, USA

I need to start this post by confessing that I’ve never watched a boxing match, and while I obviously knew who Muhammad Ali was, I didn’t really know anything about him.

Of course, I knew he was a boxer, that he became a Muslim in the 1960’s, and said ‘float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.’ But I didn’t know the extent of his deep, troubled, and triumphant history.

The Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, KY, was more than just a boxing museum. It was a beautiful example humanity, justice, and how being the greatest of all time can be both a blessing and a curse.

The tour is self-guided, but starts with a short film about his life. The Husband was a little bored by it, since he already knew everything it went over, but I was enthralled. He was so much more than a boxer, and his work as an activist was compelling and inspiring.

After the film, you head into the museum. It’s very well done, arranged in chronological order with tons of things to see and interactive exhibits. The layout made it easy to spend more time in areas that were more interesting to us, and skimming over other.

Toward the end of the museum, they have little seating areas where you can choose a match to watch. I tried to watch a few minutes but boxing just isn’t for me.

At $20 per adult, it was more than worth the price of admission. Tickets are not timed, and are good for one year from purchase. It is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan your visit accordingly.
