Restaurant Review: Flavio al Velavevodetto, Rome, Italy

Mixed in with our quest for the best pizza of Rome is my quest for the best cacio e pepe. I’ve had a lot of cacio e pepe since we got here, almost every day, and I think I found the best one.

We saw lots of recommendations for Flavio al Velavevodetto in Testaccio in Rome, so it was high on my list. We went for a long walk one day and ended up in Testaccio.

The restaurant is gorgeous. There is tons of indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor seating feels like you are in a gorgeous wine cellar.

I also really loved the menu. They do not mess around. Tourists, you don’t need to worry about breaching Roman protocol, because they make it very obvious.

We had already eaten lunch before we realized we were so close, so I only had the cacio e pepe and The Husband didn’t have anything. Holy shit. It was hands down the best cacio e pepe I’ve ever had. The pasta was perfetta. The cacio perfetto. The pepe was perfetto. It’s what you should think of when you think of cacio e pepe.

We went at a random time, for a late lunch, and there wasn’t a wait. They accept reservations and I would highly recommend one, especially for dinner. And if you love cacio e pepe, you have to stop here when in Rome.
