Our vagabond life: Savannah

Oh romantic Savannah. With its winding ivy, cobblestone walkways, B and B’s, and quaint little shops, it’s understandable how you could fall in love there.

But I’m not a romantic, lovey dovey, foofy type person. Gag me.

I love Savannah for Forrest Gump, ghost stories, and the lack of an open container law.

Now don’t get me wrong. I like some charm and beauty just as much as anyone else. We stayed at a lovely bed and breakfast called the Gastonian. It was simply charming and romantic. The outside looked just like a Savannah bed and breakfast should, and the staff was delightful.

All the rooms are beautiful and each guest room had a name. We stayed in the Eli Whitney room.

Ironic, because Eli Whitney is actually my distant relative!

The room was surprisingly modern and spacious for a bed and breakfast. I’m not sure what I was expecting but I was very pleased with the room.

Eli Whitney room.

The common areas were decorated just right and you could feel the southern charm. The main room offered cordials in the evening, which even the Husband imbibed.

And when you leave the B and B, and don’t feel like going out the front door, well you’re in luck. True to old style houses, you can enter and leave through the windows.

Walking around Savannah will take you back in time.  And if you’re from New York, it will also slow down time. It’s easy to just stroll down the cobblestone street, people being pleasant and saying hello, while you just enjoy your surroundings.

Just some friendly local firemen.

Or maybe you just want to sit down on a bench and tell a stranger your unbelievable life story while you wait for the bus…

How romantic….

But if you get sick of all this romantic crap, you can stop by the official headquarters for Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

But if you are anything like the Husband and me, you will really just be walking around with a beer, checking everything out.

Or maybe just hanging out at the US Custom House.

This is as close to bad ass as the Husband gets.  There is no open container law, so you can drink freely anywhere you desire.

And when you get back to the Gastonian after a long day of sightseeing and beer drinking, you will find some delicious cookies on your bed, with a little card for the next day’s weather!

What a clever idea!

The next morning we got up, had a delightful homemade breakfast in the kitchen of the Gastonian. It was served on a large butcher block type table and it was the perfect ending to our “romantic” stay in Savannah.
