Hotel Review: Trapp Family Lodge

The Sound of Music has been my favorite movie since I was a child. I’ve always dreamed of staying the Trapp Family Lodge so when we decided to do a New England road trip, I knew it was time to cross Stowe, VT, and the Trapp Family Lodge off my bucket list.

Quick backstory is that the Von Trapp family, who The Sound of Music is based on, fled Austria during WWII and eventually made their way to Stowe, VT. The area reminded them of their beloved Austria so they settled down and eventually opened the Trapp Family Lodge. The Von Trapp family still own the lodge and if you’re lucky you may see one of them while you’re there (unfortunately, I was not lucky).

We booked the Salzburg Suite because it was huge and I’d love to go to Salzburg someday. The room was huge, way more space than we needed. The bed was comfy and the bathroom had a huge soaking tub. It has a tiny TV that had a weird ratio you had to reset, which bothered the Husband but made no difference to me. The shower water temperature was extreme, going from very hot to very cold every minute or so. It was really uncomfortable. Most disappointingly, we had a view of construction workers and dumpsters. I wish I would have reserved a cheaper room, as it seemed like they had a better view.

The common areas and the grounds were beautiful. They have a bar, two restaurants, a cafe, fitness area, brewpub, sheep, cows, ponds, trails, and so many birds on their property. I went on a guided birding walk (I became a birder during COVID and now I like to pretend I’m doing a big year) and saw some amazing birds, including tons of warblers, ravens, indigo buntings, and a scarlet tanager!

There were Von Trapp artifacts all over the lodge. Pictures of Maria and the family were found on all the walls. Seeing all the family photos alone was worth staying there. It was everything I wanted it to be and I hope I have the chance to go back someday.
