The train from Bath, England, to Cardiff, Wales is just over an hour so it was a quick day trip while we were in Bath, and a way to cross Wales off our list.
Cardiff is an adorably charming city, with cute little arcades hidden between buildings. I love the way cities in Europe use every little nook and cranny, with alleyways between building giving life to restaurants and shops inside the buildings. We wandered down St Mary’s Street, enjoying the window shopping and architecture, as we walked from the train station to Cardiff Castle.

The area that is now Cardiff Castle was first occupied by the Romans in the 1st century. The Normans constructed the Keep that overlooks the city in the 11th century. The medieval Lords of Glamorgan began work on the House during the 15th century and the Bute family transformed the House into the Victorian Gothic home it is today in the 19th century. During WWII, it was used as a bomb shelter for the citizens of Cardiff.
The weather was lovely and the line was long to get in, so we decided to walk around the castle instead of going inside. In hindsight, I wish we would have gone it. It looks like a magnificent castle.

After walking around the castle and having lunch, we grabbed a few Welsh cakes before heading back to the train. They are similar to scones but smaller and not as dry. And they are absolutely delightful.

While I’m sure there is more to do in Cardiff, an afternoon there was enough to get a feel of the city.

Absolutely amazing Patti-thank you SO much for allowing me to vicariously enjoy the UK like I have never done! There is an optometry program in Cardiff and my Saudi friends have talked about it many times (one just returned from there!) and I never conceptualized such amazing beauty! We traveled Scotland and saw many castles in our 1000 mile car trip, but I think you have trumped our experience. So glad you are doing this! Bill
Thanks, Bill! It’s been incredible to experience so many new areas, foods, and people! I have so much inspiration for new characters and settings that my head may explode!
