For over a decade a dear friend in Tampa and I have talked about meeting in her hometown of Regensburg, Germany. During our travels last year, it finally happened! The Husband and I spent four days in Regensburg (up next on the blog) and did a day trip to nearby Munich. One of our first stops was the original Hofbräuhaus.
Hofbräuhaus originated in 1589, when it’s sole purpose was to supply beer to the Bavarian Court. Centuries later, it was opened as a tavern in 1828 by King Ludwig the 1st. It was moved to it’s current location in 1897 because the they needed more space. Today, Hofbräuhaus has over 3,500 guests every day.

The place is huge. There is so much to see and there are rooms everywhere. The ground floor is a giant traditional cafeteria-style room with long tables, music, and lively crowds imbibing in Hofbräuhaus beer collectively. The ceiling are painted beautifully and decor has a funky Bavarian vibe. This is the area to sit in if you want to enjoy the experience without hearing the people you’re with.

Upstairs is quieter and better suited for groups who want to easily have a conversation. The decor is more woody than whimsical, the rooms are calmer, and the tables are more intimate.

I started with their weißbeir Hofbräuhaus Weisse, one of my favorite kinds of beers. For me, the yeastier the better. It was delicious, thanks to centuries of perfecting beer. Collectively, we ordered the cream of potato and vegetable soup, sausage, pretzels, sauerkraut, and the dessert special. Everything was delicious and it was the perfect break from walking miles (or kilometers) around München.

When visiting Munich, you need to stop by the original Hofbräuhaus. It’s full of history and so much fun! The delicious food and beer are a fantastic added bonus.
