This post is a little outside of my norm, but it’s something that is very important to me. Too often we see stories of young people, with the whole lives ahead of them, taking their lives because they can’t take being bullied for one more minute. Half of all teenagers are bullied online, yet only one in ten report it. The remaining nine out of ten never report the bullying, which isn’t surprising. They see examples being set in the media of powerful people being praised for being bullies. Or maybe they are afraid no one will believe them. Likely, the bully has threatened that it will get worse if they tell.
Full disclaimer: I am not a parent. But I am a human being and I hate the thought of half of the teenagers out there enduring such hatred and losing their sense of self-worth. Thankfully a local Tampa company has found a solution that can open the conversation about bullying without violating their child’s privacy.
BulliPatrol is a service that monitors your child’s social media while maintaining their privacy. It scans their social media and analyzes the emotional intent of the messages. You’ll receive a weekly report with a graph showing positive, negative, and neutral activity. It does not reveal the actual post. If there is an increase in negativity, the parent will received an email or text, letting you know it might be time to have a conversation with their child. Even parents that monitor their child’s social media diligently may miss a negative message, considering children receive more than 3,400 messages every month.
When you sign up for BulliPatrol, you’ll receive a dashboard where you can add your child’s social media accounts. For $5.99 per month, BulliPatrol will monitor for negativity and notify you of any changes, opening the door for discussion with your child.
